2020 Vision

On November 30, 2019, just under a month before China first reported cases of what the world would soon know as COVID-19, I posted a song I wrote about a security breach at a lab and the subsequent propagation of a virus that wiped out humanity (“A Breach of Microscopic Fauna”, Prelude to Smoochfest). On 18 March 2020, during the first days of the lockdown, I posted a song I wrote about asymptomatic international travelers unknowingly bringing the virus back to their country, thus giving rise to the pandemic as we know it today (“Song of the Silent Carrier”, 2006 7 21).

Today, after 7 weeks of lockdown, I’m posting the first song of Year of the Hermit, the new album. This new set of songs present a slight change of direction in my songwriting, with new instruments and a slightly different sound that’s nonetheless true to the basic precepts of Isthmian Goth Hop and Arcachata.

Year of the Hermit is about individual isolation, introspection and adaptation in the face of fear of the world and of the future.

“2020 Vision” looks to set the stage for the rest of the album as it is the result of a wonderment at the situation we are going through as a species, which is really outright scary and surreal: a quasi-apocalyptic socioeconomic landscape of unprecedented dimensions.
